Canadian Settlement · Claims Open

Current Status

Claims are open. The claim deadline is November 4, 2026. The settlement has not been approved yet: the Superior Court of Quebec authorized the case as a class action for settlement purposes only and scheduled the settlement approval hearing for November 3, 2026. No payment date has been announced, and payments will not go out until the court approves the settlement and appeal periods expire. The opt-out and objection deadline, September 5, 2026, has passed.

What Changed Recently?

Chocmod Canada Inc., which sells Truffettes de France truffles in Canada, agreed to a $300,000 CAD national settlement in May 2026 to resolve a proposed class action filed in the Superior Court of Quebec on April 7, 2025. The court then authorized the case for settlement purposes, approved the notice and opened the claim period.

The plaintiffs allege the products were marketed in a misleading way, with the Truffettes de France name and labels suggesting the truffles were made in France when, the plaintiffs claim, they were manufactured in Canada. Chocmod Canada Inc. denies any liability or wrongdoing, and no court has made a finding against it.

Along with the cash fund, Chocmod Canada Inc. agreed, without admitting liability, to stop using the Truffettes de France brand name in Canada and adopt Truffettes à la Française, subject to approval of a trademark application it filed on July 1, 2025. If that trademark is not approved, the company agreed to display "Made in Canada" more prominently on the packaging instead.

Who Qualifies?

The class covers people who live in Canada and bought at least one covered Truffettes de France product from April 7, 2022 to September 5, 2026. A covered product is any product carrying the phrase "Truffettes de France" on its label, including these fourteen named in the notice:

Truffettes de France Truffles Dusted with Cocoa Powder — 1 kg box

Truffettes de France Milk Chocolate Truffles With Hazelnut Pieces — 5.3 oz

Truffettes de France Milk Truffle Assortment — almond and hazelnut pieces, 14 oz

Salted Caramel Cocoa Truffles

Cognac Champagne Truffles

Organic Original Truffles

Organic Caramel Cocoa Truffles

Raspberry Flavoured Cocoa Truffles

The Amazon links point to the U.S. storefront and are there to help identify the product lines. Only purchases made in Canada during the class period count toward a claim, so a box bought today, or bought in the United States, does not qualify. The list in the notice is not exhaustive: any product whose label says "Truffettes de France" is covered.

Officers, directors, employees, contractors, agents and representatives of Chocmod Canada Inc. are excluded, as are people who opted out by September 5, 2026.

How Much Can You Get?

Each approved claim starts at $3 CAD per covered product. Without proof of purchase, a claim is capped at three products, or $9 CAD. With proof of purchase there is no cap on the number of products.

The final amount is not fixed. The $300,000 CAD fund first pays notice, translation and administration costs, taxes and class counsel's fees, which counsel is asking the court to set at $100,000 CAD plus disbursements and taxes. What remains is shared among valid claims. If claims add up to more than that balance, every payment is reduced pro rata. If money is left over, payments rise pro rata by up to 100% of each claim, so a $9 CAD no-receipt claim could reach $18 CAD. The per-claimant figure will not be known until the claim period closes and all claims are reviewed.

Any money still left after claims are paid goes first to Quebec's Fonds d'aide aux actions collectives, whose share the agreement limits to 22% of the residual, and then to Food Secure Canada and Dans la rue. None returns to the company.

The deadline for filing claims in the Quebec Opioids Class Action, initially set for July 31, 2026, has been extended to November 30, 2026 , to allow more class members (including heirs) to file a claim.

Class members who submit their claim form before November 30, 2026, have until February 28, 2027 , to send the medical documents supporting their claim. Heirs of deceased class members also have until February 28, 2027, to submit the documents proving their status as heirs.

The Opioid Class Action will continue against the Defendants who did not enter into a settlement agreement.

DISTRIBUTION OF SETTLEMENT FUNDS TO MEMBERS

The Settlement Agreements approved by the Court since the beginning of the Quebec Opioids Class Action provide for a distribution amount of approximately $22,600,000 (the “ Settlement Fund ”), to be divided among members with valid claims. Members who have submitted a valid claim will share equally in the Settlement Fund. At this time, the amount that will be distributed to each person with a valid claim has not been determined.

To be eligible for compensation, members must complete and submit the claim form approved by the Court before the deadline, and provide documentary evidence proving that:

  • between 1996 and the present day, as a Quebec resident, they were prescribed and consumed one or more type of opioid products found in the “List of Eligible Opioid for Claims Process only” (see list attached to the Claim Form); and
  • they received a diagnosis of opioid use disorder or treatment for opioid use disorder.

The direct heirs of deceased persons who meet these criteria are also members of the Opioid Class Action and eligible to participate in the distribution.

Data Breach · Canada · Claims Open

Current Status

Claims are open. The claims period began August 4, 2026 and runs until February 3, 2027; the official notice gives no time of day, so file early. The Federal Court of Canada approved the settlement on May 5, 2026, so there is no further approval hearing. The deadline to opt out passed on February 20, 2026. No payment date had been announced as of September 24, 2026.

What Changed Recently?

The claims period opened on August 4, 2026, following the Federal Court of Canada's approval of the settlement on May 5, 2026 (Sweet v. His Majesty the King, 2026 FC 590, Justice Southcott). The action, Federal Court File No. T-982-20, had been certified as a class proceeding in 2022 (2022 FC 1228).

The case arose from two sets of incidents in 2020. From June 26 to August 18, 2020, attackers used credential stuffing — trying usernames and passwords stolen elsewhere — against CRA My Account, GCKey and Employment and Social Development Canada accounts. From October 8 to November 25, 2020, the CRA's Represent-a-Client portal was misused. The plaintiffs allege the Government of Canada failed to protect the personal and financial information held in those accounts. The Crown denies wrongdoing, and the settlement is not an admission of liability.

Who Qualifies?

The class is made up of all persons whose personal or financial information in a Government of Canada online account — including CRA My Account, My Service Canada and other accounts accessed with GCKey — was disclosed to a third party without authorization between March 1, 2020 and December 31, 2020.

Compensation is narrower than the class. Payments are available only for the two breach periods: June 26 to August 18, 2020 (the credential-stuffing attacks) and October 8 to November 25, 2020 (the Represent-a-Client misuse). People who opted out by February 20, 2026 are not part of the settlement. The class is not limited by where a person lives; it turns on whether their Government of Canada account was affected.

How Much Can You Get?

The Government of Canada is paying an all-inclusive $8,760,500.90 CAD, which covers class member compensation, administration and class counsel fees. Class members claim in up to two categories:

  • Access claim — up to $80 CAD. For people whose account was accessed without authorization, paid at $20 CAD an hour for up to four hours of time spent dealing with it.
  • Fraud claim — up to $200 CAD. For people whose account access led to fraud, paid at $20 CAD an hour for up to ten hours.
  • Special Compensation — up to $5,000 CAD. Reimbursement of documented out-of-pocket costs incurred within 12 months of the breach period, available in addition to an Access or Fraud claim.

The most one person can receive is $5,200 CAD. Each category has its own pool: up to $2,720,000 CAD for Access claims, up to $2,800,000 CAD for Fraud claims, and $500,000 CAD plus any unused money for Special Compensation. If approved claims in a pool exceed what it holds, payments in that pool are reduced pro rata. Any money left over goes to the Privacy and Access Council of Canada.

The Court approved class counsel fees of $2,090,182.18 CAD plus $89,255.81 CAD in disbursements, paid from the settlement amount, along with honoraria for the representative plaintiffs.

What Proof or Notice ID Is Required?

No administrator-issued code is needed to get started. The claims portal checks eligibility against the government's breach records using either the PIN from a notice, if you received one, or your last name, email address and the last three digits of your Social Insurance Number.

Access and Fraud claims are paid at a set hourly rate. Special Compensation is different: it reimburses documented out-of-pocket costs, so receipts or other records of each expense are needed for that part of a claim.
